The image of Châteauvillain is, most often, associated with the Daims Park of 272 hectares that is a favourite among walkers, but it would be a disfavour to the city to only mention this asset. In reality, the history of Châteauvillain throughout the centuries is like a real epic which warrants a detour in itself. Inscribed in the stone of its fortified walls from the XII and XIV centuries, at the foot of its machicolations, at the summit of the twenty-old towers (there was at some point over sixty), in its labyrinth of alleys and rampart walk, this surprising history begs to be discovered. Coquettishly hidden in a curve of the Aujon River, Châteauvillain is also a city of gardens by the water, nestled in ancient trenches dug in calcareous rock.
